7 Water Safety Skills Kids Learn at Goldfish Swim School
At Goldfish Swim School, we practice water safety skills during every lesson! Some of the things young swimmers learn at Goldfish Swim School that help to keep kids safe in and around the water include:
1. Crab Walk
Teaching children to do a crab walk along the side of the pool helps them to be able to be safe in the water by knowing what to do if the water is too deep or they can’t swim to a ladder. It’s also a great way to build upper body and arm strength and endurance in little ones to prepare them for doing full swim strokes!
2. Getting Out of the Pool
Part of staying safe in the water is knowing how to get out of the water safely! At Goldfish Swim School, our instructors use integrity, compassion and trust to get little ones to learn how jump into the water – while getting accustomed to going underwater quickly – and then be able to turn around and head back to the wall. There, kids will learn to get out of the pool easily using the elbow, elbow, tummy, knee method.
3. Going Underwater
Generally, the earlier you introduce babies to having water in their face, the easier it will be (that’s why we offer swim lessons for babies starting at age 4 months!). And, as much as it may surprise new parents, it’s a relatively natural process to show babies how to put their faces in the water – and this helps babies and kids to remain safe and not become agitated if the water does happen to unexpectedly get in their face or eyes.
4. Rolling Onto Back
Especially for new swimmers, it’s important to know what to do when you’re swimming and become tired or need a breath. That’s why we teach kids to be able to roll over onto their backs mid-swim. This provides an excellent opportunity to stay safe and not panic while taking a second or two to regroup.
5. Practicing Pulls
Just as your baby learns to crawl before walking, they’ll learn to do practice pulls that mimic swimming strokes before putting all the motions together. Practicing pulls helps it become a natural thing to do in the water, and part of why repetition is important and why perpetual swim lessons are best to reinforce water safety.
6. Treading Water
Even young children can learn how to stay safe in deep water by treading water! Our different levels of classes allow kids to practice treading water for 10 seconds, 30 seconds or one minute, depending on their skill level.
7. Swimming Strokes
All the building blocks of swimming that we teach come together and culminate in your child swimming all by him or herself – while their instructor is nearby for safety. Learning to swim is something to celebrate, and kids are sure to have a GOLDEN experience seeing their extraordinary results at Goldfish Swim School!
